Is All Clad D5 really much better, or should you just pick All Clad Tri Ply instead? Continue reading below for the answer!
Set Options and Sizes
Both All Clad D5 and All Clad Tri Ply are available as 5-piece, 7-piece, 10-piece, and 14-piece cookware sets. The 5-piece sets of both models are similar, as each includes a 10” fry pan, 3-qt sauce pan with lid, and 3-qt saute pan with lid. The 7-piece set of All Clad D5 has larger frying pan and stockpot than All Clad Tri Ply, while the sizes of the sauce pans and saute pans are similar. Finally, the 10-piece and 14-piece sets of both models are almost similar except that All Clad Tri Ply’s sauce pans are slightly bigger. However, if you just want to buy a specific cookware piece instead of getting an entire set, you can indeed choose the size that your prefer, as both models provide their pieces in various sizes. But if you want to get multiple pieces, it is almost always more cost-efficient if you buy a cookware set.
Design and Construction
Now, we are going to dig deeper into both models. Frankly speaking, the names of these models already indicate the technologies being used in them.
All Clad Tri Ply got its name from the three-ply construction. An All Clad Tri Ply cookware piece should have three layers that form the body. The three layers consist of the stainless steel interior, aluminum core, and stainless steel exterior. So, why do we need an aluminum core? Why isn’t it entirely stainless steel? Well, steel is not the very best of all heat conductors. Making a cookware piece solely from stainless steel will cause the cookware to have bad cooking performance. With an aluminum core, the heat received from the stove will be able to be distributed evenly across the whole surface area, allowing more even cooking.
On the other hand, All Clad D5 has five layers. They consist of the stainless steel interior, aluminum core, stainless steel core, aluminum core, and stainless steel exterior. As you can see, there are three cores. Such design aims to deliver more efficient and more even heat distribution across the entire surface when used on an induction or flat-top stove.
All Clad D5 indeed spreads the heat more evenly, but it also takes more time to make the interior surface hot. Still, the cooking performance is awesome, especially on top of an induction stove. All Clad Tri Ply heats more quickly, also with excellent heat distribution, though somewhat not as even as All Clad D5 especially around the edge. In addition, All Clad D5 is significantly heavier than All Clad Tri Ply.
