Tech giant Sony has added to its line of Ultra HD Blu-ray players with their recent introduction of the BDP-S790 and BDP-S6200. Each has 4K support and is packed with features, but which of the systems gives more bang for your buck?
Well, the two players look fairly similar on paper and can be picked up for $170-$200. Aside from being 4K and 3D ready, both also have in-built WiFi, allowing access to apps and streaming services including Netflix, and both are fitted with a dual-core processor that promise seamless performance. The super-fast processor is particularly good for the interface used by both devices, Sony’s Cross Media Bar. Unlike previous models, there won’t be any issues with screen lag and navigating menus is a breeze. Whilst all of these functions are shared by both players, the S6200 does have a couple of features that the S790 doesn’t – the main one being Triluminous display technology’, which improves picture by using a broader palate of colors to form an image. The S6200 also has an upgraded audio enhancer and some other unique features including screen mirroring on Android phones and tablets.
Despite these benefits, the S790 has its own perks too – most notably its Skype functionality when fitted with a suitable camera and an additional HDMI output for those wishing to connect to several devices. The S790 is also a little sleeker – worth bearing in mind if you’re someone who’s concerned with how the device will look in your living room.

The S6200 is the better player, but those concerned with design and a little extra functionality should consider the S790. The 4K and 3D support along with a dual-core processor means both will provide an excellent entertainment experience, however the S6200 has narrowly beaten the S790 thanks to its inclusion of features that improve both picture and audio – but that’s not to say the other isn’t a decent device.
